Responding to COVID-19: Education in Latin America and the Caribbean

National responses

The online repository of resources below constitutes a joint effort of the Regional Education Working Group (REWG) for Latin America and the Caribbean in its response to the COVID-19 crisis.

The REWG was established in 2011 under the framework of REDLAC (Risk Emergency Disaster Working Group for Latin America and the Caribbean) to support Ministries of Education in their education in emergencies response (including risk management, disaster and migration), based on the Sendai Framework, the World Initiative for Safe Schools and the Global Education Cluster, to ensure the right to education to all children in the region.

With a view to ensuring region-wide coherence in educational responses, strategies and coordination, and against the background of the increasing internal and external displacement across Latin America and Caribbean, this group also acts as the Regional Education Sector under the Regional Interagency Coordination Platform for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela.

The Group is co-led by UNICEF and Save the Children and comprises the following members: AECID, ECHO, IFRC, INEE, IOM, NRC, OCHA, PLAN International, RET, UNAIDS, UNDRR, UNESCO, UNHCR, and UN WOMEN.

Depending on the local situation, countries are developing diverse responses to educational needs arising from suspension of face to face classes.  

In some cases, this means protocols, guidance and administrative circulars;  in others downloadable study guides, digital platforms and the use of other media, especially radio and television.

The Information System on Educational Trends in Latin America (SITEAL) of the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning (in Buenos Aires) a systematization of the responses of Latin American education systems to the COVID-19 crisis based on the information collected by the Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Organization of Ibero-American States has also set up its platform COVID-19 Impact on Education, Science and Culture in Ibero-America
