The ASPnet Strategy for 2014-2021, "Global Network of Schools addressing Global Challenges", identifies Education for Global Citizenship as one of its two priorities. The 2030 Agenda specifically highlights how important it is for all learners to "acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for […] global citizenship […]" (target 4.7  of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda).

The aim of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is to empower learners of all ages – children, young people and adults alike – so they assume active roles in facing and resolving global challenges and become proactive contributors to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure world.

For UNESCO, this implies ensuring that GCED covers three domains of learning: The cognitive, the socio-emotional and the behavioural. Within each, GCED promotes specific learning objectives:

1.     The Cognitive: to acquire knowledge, understanding and critical thinking about global issues and the interconnectedness/interdependency of countries and different populations.

2.     The Socio-emotional: to have a sense of belonging to a common humanity, sharing values and responsibilities, sharing empathy, solidarity and respect for differences and diversity.

3.     The Behavioral: to act responsibly a local, national and global levels for a more peaceful and sustainable world.
