As part of the Global Action Programme initiative "Today for Tomorrow: Coordinating and Implementing the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development", funded by the Government of Japan, ASPnet is piloting the implementation of the whole-institution approach to ESD, with a particular focus on climate change.

Project: ASPnet schools implement the whole-institution approach to ESD and climate change

As a forward-looking network, the UNESCO Associated Schools network (ASPnet) strives to introduce new issues and concerns in the classroom and in communities, to better prepare children and youth to address current and future challenges. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and climate change are top priorities for ASPnet to help reorient education worldwide and build more sustainable communities.

Whole-institution approaches.jpgWhole-institution approaches are particularly known as promising mechanisms for integrating ESD into education holistically. The whole-institution approach to ESD and climate change implies mainstreaming sustainability into all activities of the school, including the reorientation of teaching content and methodology, green campus and facility management, school governance, as well as cooperation with partners and the broader community. This transformative approach mobilises all school stakeholders as well as partners and communities, and empowers children and young people to play an active role in their schools, families and communities.

The project spans over two years (2016-2018), and mobilises a comprehensive and coordinated action on the ground globally. It supports over 250 ASPnet Schools in 25 selected countries over 5 regions in their efforts to develop and implement a whole-school action plan on ESD, with a particular focus on climate change.
