Empowering individuals through lifelong learning
An important economic hub in the East and Central African regions, Nairobi is confident that joining the UNESCO GNLC will empower its citizens and tackle the country’s challenges to sustainable development.
Vision and motivation
Nairobi hopes to build a learning city where residents can acquire new knowledge and skills throughout their lives for their social and economic prosperity.
Challenges and goals
Due to the fast-changing and complex social, economic and political situation in Nairobi, the city wishes to address the following areas:
- Access to lifelong learning opportunities.
- Social, cultural and economic development and prosperity.
- Addressing the disillusionment of youth who fail to realize job expectations.
- Developing lifelong learning programmes that fit into different segments of communities.
Plan and implementation
Nairobi City County firmly believes that empowering individuals through lifelong learning will enhance their ability to tackle emerging challenges in this new era.
To develop its learning city initiative, the city commits to the following:
- Consolidating a leadership and decision-making mechanism, and enabling community participation in policy drafting.
- Identifying key areas for improvement and developing an action plan for building a learning city.
- Building strong partnership with stakeholders and organizations.
- Aligning the government’s priorities with the learning city action plan.
- Setting up working groups in different areas of interest to facilitating community-based learning and mutual learning.
- Obtaining feedback from citizens, evaluating the outcome and monitoring the process of developing a learning city.
Our mission is to provide, promote and manage globally competitive basic education and training for sustainable development and the general welfare of Nairobi residents and their children.
