From 7 to 13 November 2016, the archaeological department of the University of Zimbabwe hosted a regional workshop on rock art conservation with participants from Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. The workshop received financial support from the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa and the French Embassy in Zimbabwe.

The workshop discussed rock art conservation concepts, illustrated by presentations on threats to rock art in the region. Lectures by Dr Stephanie Touron, a researcher from the Laboratory of Historical Monuments in France, on conservation policies and techniques were complemented by practical field exercises at Chikupo and Mawanga Rock Art sites.

The workshop contributed to strengthening the network of rock art conservation experts in Southern Africa.
