Youth Driving Community Education: Testimonies of Empowerment from Latin America

  • May 2016

‘This publication gives a voice to marginalized and underprivileged youth in Latin America, thereby giving readers insights into the contexts in which these young people live and how they use education to empower their communities,’ Arne Carlsen, Director, UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL).

Jóvenes participando en la educación comunitaria: Testimonios de empoderamiento desde América Latina (Youth Driving Community Education: Testimonies of Empowerment from Latin America) is a publication containing twelve testimonies from people in Latin America aged between 19 and 29 years. All the testimonies are in Spanish with the exception of one from Brazil, which is in Portuguese. As learners, educators and community leaders, these young people initiate and actively participate in improving their own and other people’s lives in their communities. By using education, they engage with diverse issues such as social inclusion, human rights and sustainable development, which are imperative in holistic development.

This compilation of testimonies shows how youth engagement in education can empower communities. UIL hopes that it will be a source of inspiration for youth in the wider region of Latin America and the Caribbean as well as those in other world regions.
