25 March 2019 marked the 10-year anniversary of the Effective Literacy and Numeracy Practices Database, an online collection of best practice literacy programmes from around the world.
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) established the Effective Literacy and Numeracy Practices Database in 2009 as part of UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE)[1], which was developed in 2006 to support countries in achieving a 50 per cent improvement in their adult literacy rates by 2015.
LitBase provides policy-makers, researchers, literacy programme managers and other stakeholders with insight into the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of notable literacy programmes. It features around 220 case studies on youth and adult literacy programmes from around 100 countries, all of which are freely available in English, French and Spanish. The database is continuously growing with more case studies added on an ongoing basis.
Based on the case studies, UIL has published six thematic case study compilations on family learning, sustainable development, women’s empowerment, ICTs, multilingual/multicultural literacy and how to foster a literate environment.
UIL will continue to promote LitBase as a global resource in the field of youth and adult literacy.
