In addition to reducing recidivism rates and the financial and social costs of reoffending, education in prison equips prisoners with an opportunity to overcome disadvantage by improving their learning outcomes and building on new or improved skills in order to contribute more fully to society.

The UNESCO Chair of Applied Research for Education in Prison, in collaboration with the Institut de coopération pour l’éducation des adultes (ICÉA) and the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), is calling for papers for an international symposium on research and innovative practices in prison education. The event is scheduled to take place in Montreal (Quebec, Canada) from 25 to 27 May 2021.

Issues such as the impact of prison education, political and administrative challenges, and educational practices in prisons will be covered in group sessions and individual expert presentations. Panel proposals for the different session types can now be submitted. Applications for group sessions of 90 minutes must be submitted by 15 September 2020. Proposals for individual 20-minute presentations can be submitted up to 1 October 2020. More information, including specific themes, is provided in the call for proposals document.

The event is open to everyone and aims to bring together individuals from the worlds of politics, research, practice and civil society to discuss different issues concerning prison education and to exchange innovative practice and research. The symposium also aims to give a voice to former prisoners as well as people currently involved in the penal system. In the event that the current health crisis worsens, the symposium will take place online.
