Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and UNESCO evaluate ways to enhance the inclusiveness and equity of the country’s climate change adaptation efforts.

The work and its main output – the Assessment Report of the Level of Inclusiveness of the Indonesia’s National Action Plan for Climate Change Adaptation – addressed two key questions:
-   How do we integrate social protection, disaster risk reduction and climate change mitigation policies to optimize their reach to all citizens?
-   How do we design these policies to make sure that the most vulnerable groups – girls and women, the very poor households, people with disabilities  – have equal access to the benefits of these policies?

People living in the coastal areas of Indonesia – a vast archipelago of seventeen thousand islands – are at the forefront in the fight against negative effects of climate change. Among the population, poor people are more vulnerable and have fewer resources to adapt to the manifold impacts of climate change such as flooding, drought, famine, and disease.

Recognizing the special vulnerability of certain communities, the government has enacted a wide range of laws and regulations to protect coastal populations against the effects of climate change, which are reviewed in this project.

The next steps of this effort will focus on using the outcomes of this evaluation and its recommendations to provide guidance to the national policymakers in revising the National Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan and maximizing the inclusiveness of its design and its outcomes.
