Salonga National Park

Threats to the Site (1999)

The Salonga National Park was the only one of five sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo which was not included on the List of World Heritage in Danger.Due to its central location in the country, it was less affected by the ongoing armed conflicts.

Poaching and housing construction, however, affect the integrity of the site and its inclusion will allow Salonga - like the four other sites in this country - to benefit from the UNESCO project, funded in large part by the United Nations Foundation, to provide assistance - amounting to USD 4.1 million - in areas such as training of personnel and equipment, as well as protection of biodiversity.
