Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2020: Join us and register your events

22/09/2020

As we approach the 9th Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week, UNESCO, the Republic of Korea and partners are calling on all stakeholders to join the celebrations by organizing online and offline events or initiatives in their communities, cities, and regions.

Register your event here. All registered events will be featured on the UNESCO website and some on the Global MIL Week interactive platform.

This year’s edition will focus on the new wave of disinformation that the world is confronted with during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how media and information literacy (MIL) can enable citizens to build resilience to ‘disinfodemic’ beyond this current public health crisis.

Under the theme “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information Literacy for Everyone and by Everyone”, Global MIL Week 2020 will respond to the increasing demand for MIL worldwide. It highlights the necessity of recognizing our shared interest in improving everyone’s competencies to critically interact with information, media and technology, as they engage in social development. This year’s theme also underlines the pivotal role of MIL in fostering quality journalism, access to information and freedom of expression, which all have implications on how the war against disinformation can be overcome.

Join us! UNESCO, the Republic of Korea and partners are calling on partners all over the world to celebrate Global MIL Week.

Alongside the In-Focus Sessions, local celebratory events around the world promote MIL connections across disciplines, professions and borders thus forming an integral part of Global MIL Week.

Celebration events can take place during the months leading up to Global MIL Week, during the actual Week (24-31 October) or be announced as events that will occur just after.

How to celebrate Global MIL Week?

Here are two ways to celebrate Global MIL Week:

  • Organize a MIL Day online or offline in your country, city, community, school, university, library, etc.
  • Promote MIL and the hashtag #GlobalMILWeek on social media.

Global MIL Week is celebrated annually from 24 to 31 October. It is led by UNESCO, in cooperation with the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance (GAPMIL), the Media and Information and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network, and other partners.

The UNESCO-led MIL Alliance (GAPMIL) is a groundbreaking effort to promote international cooperation to ensure that all citizens have access to MIL competencies. Currently, GAPMIL has over 600 member organizations from over 80 countries.
