Since the designation as a Creative City of Design in 2014, Bilbao (Spain), has experienced over the past years a social, cultural and economic transformation, placing creativity, design and culture at the heart of its sustainable development strategies.
On the occasion of the UNESCO Cities of Design subnetwork meeting 2020, hosted by the Creative City of Graz (Austria) and Saint-Etienne (France), three thematic panel discussions were organized on different facets of urban development to make cities sustainable and future-proof. To allow cities to participate form all over the world, the panel discussions followed a hybrid format.
As a UNESCO Creative City of Design, Montréal has developed numerous strategies to ensure greater recognition for designers and architects and to increase the quality of design of buildings and public spaces. With this in mind, the city recently launched an international multidisciplinary landscape architecture competition for the development of a site located in the heart of the “Quartier des spectacles” in downtown Montreal.
Saint-Étienne (France), the only Creative City of Design in France celebrates its 10th anniversary as a UNESCO Creative City of Design.
Singapore, a UNESCO Creative City of Design will organize the second edition of the Design Education Summit on 4 February 2021. Muharraq (Bahrain), a UNESCO Creative City of Design since 2019 has set up an online photography exhibition titled 'Inspired by Muharraq'. The exhibition aims to highlight the architectural scenes and skyline of the city, which has undergone a series of changes, including upgrades and restorations, giving the audience the opportunity to engage with a wealth of inspiring material.
With the aim to nurture a design-empowered workforce to meet future demand of the economy, Singapore, a UNESCO Creative City of Design together with DesignSingapore Council, SkillsFuture Singapore and Workforce Singapore has developed the Skills Framework for Design.
Seoul, a UNESCO Creative City of Design since 2010 has launched in collaboration with the Seoul Design Foundation, the 2nd edition of the ‘Human City Design Award’. The competition provides a platform to establish through design a sustainable city ecosystem for a harmonious relationship between human and the environment.
