“Britten’s War Requiem” | Hannover and Liverpool Celebrate Peace Building through Music Together

“Britten’s War Requiem” | Hannover and Liverpool Celebrate Peace Building through Music Together

When:
Fri, 11/02/2018 to Sun, 11/11/2018

From 2 to 11 November, the two UNESCO Creative Cities of Music jointly organised a series of concerts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the first World War. The concerts were held at the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Music Director of Hannover’s NDR Radiophilharmonie and Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Maestro Andrew Manze. Choirs of Hannover such as Knabenchor Hannover, Mädchenchor Hannover, Norddeutscher Figuralchor, Junges Vokalensemble Hannover and Liverpool Cathedral choir were mobilised in the framework of this joint-project.

Entitled “Britten’s War Requiem”, the concert celebrated reconciliation and peace. It brought together many musicians who worked together on building bridges through music. Not only were these concerts part of a joint-project, but the War Requiem was also taught and analysed in schools throughout Lower Saxony to raise awareness about the historical facts and also engage students with peace building and the importance of actions and words. While preparing the programme with the “Britten’s War Requiem”, another idea came up. The Boys' Choir Hanover as well as the Liverpool Cathedral Choir interviewed their (great-) grandparents or other elderly people about their memories of the war, strengthening efforts of knowledge and memory transfer.
