Using music as a medium of exchange, the UNESCO Creative Cities of Music, Llíria (Spain) and Vranje (Serbia) organized a collaborative musical event to share experiences and strengthen cooperation. As part of this joint event, the city of Vranje, in collaboration with the Stevan Mokranjac School of Music, welcomed the renowned classical music guitarist Rafael Serrallet, who is also a conservatory professor from Llíria.
As part of its one year anniversary as a UNESCO Creative City of Music, Sanandaj organized a webinar that focused on urban development and creativity to further discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and reflect upon its future plans to achieve the Network’s goals and objectives. The meeting brought together various stakeholders including high-level representatives from the Iranian Creative Cities, academics, as well as cultural professionals, and creators.
Hannover, a UNESCO Creative City of Music in Germany launched ‘hell:wach’, a 29-hour-classical music-marathon led by the city-based orchestra called ‘Orchester im Treppenhaus’ (stair-case orchestra).
On World Music Day (21 June), the city of Llíria, in collaboration with the city of Bogotá, organized the fifth edition of the music Festival ‘El DesenJazz’. Using the means of creativity and innovation, the festival further strengthened intercity cooperation as well as used it as a platform to showcase gratitude to the dedicated work of medical staff fighting the pandemic around the world.
Llíria, a UNESCO Creative City of Music in Spain will organize, on Saturday 6 June, a live-streamed artistic spectacle ‘The Arts Awaken’, that will combine various elements of music, cinema, dance, theatre, design and heritage. Organized in cooperation with the social media campaign weRculture, the multi-artistic event aims to promote further the importance of culture and creativity in times of the ongoing crisis.
A student research team from the University of Missouri Kansas City’s (UMKC) Department of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design won an award for their poster research and presentation of Comparative Urbanism - a study of the UNESCO Creative Cities. The research was presented as a poster session at the 2019 National Conference of the American Planning Association in San Francisco, California. 6,400 planners attended the annual conference from more the 30 countries.
In recognition of the significant impact of the creative industries in Asia-Pacific and the vast opportunities that arise from partnership development in the region, the UNESCO Creative City of Adelaide and its Adelaide Festival Centre, will organize the Asia-Pacific Creative Cities Conference in Adelaide, under the theme “Leadership in the Global Cultural and Creative Economy” from 23 to 26 October 2019.
From 2 to 11 November, the two UNESCO Creative Cities of Music jointly organised a series of concerts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the first World War. The concerts were held at the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Music Director of Hannover’s NDR Radiophilharmonie and Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Maestro Andrew Manze.

From 8 to 25 November, Hamamatsu, Creative City of Music in Japan, will organize the 10th edition of its International Piano Competition. Held every three years since 1991, the competition has welcomed prominent pianists, including Seong-Jin Cho, award-winner in 2009, who was also awarded at the international Chopin Piano Competition in 2015. Renowned piano teachers also participate in Hamamatsu International Piano Competition.
