Welcome to the web site of the Culture Sector of UNESCO’s Nairobi Office!

Within the framework of the UNESCO Priority Africa Flagship Programme ‘Harnessing the power of culture for sustainable development and peace in a context of regional integration’, and in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Africa Union’s Vision 2063, this web site highlights the activities of the Culture Unit of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi.

The actions undertaken by the Nairobi Office benefit, to the greatest extent possible, all of the countries covered by the Office:Comores, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda.

Through UNESCO’s  conventions and global recommendations in the field of culture, specific activities are aimed at raising awareness, providing a platform for information sharing and exchange, building capacity through training, and elaborating policies and tools in the following domains:

Underwater Cultural Heritage

Culture for Sustainable Development

Heritage at Risk

World Heritage

Intangible Cultural Heritage

Diversity of Cultural Expressions

Museums

The above activities are implemented in partnership with national authorities, universities, cultural institutions, cultural experts, cultural practitioners and civil societyas well as UNESCO Category II Centres and institutes.
