Director-General condemns murder of journalist Edney Menezes in Brazil

23/11/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of journalist Edney Menezes, 44, who was shot in his car on 15 November by two men riding a motorcycle in Peixoto de Azevedo, in Brazil’s state of Mato Grosso.

I condemn the murder of Edney Menezes. Killing a journalist undermines freedom of expression and information. I trust the Brazilian authorities will spare no effort in investigating this killing and apprehending those responsible for it so as to deter future violence against the media.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Edney Menezes worked for the Brazilian broadcaster TV Miragem

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
