Regional Workshop on The Conflict and Disaster Risk Reduction (C/DRR) Module of the Asia-Pacific Regional Handbook for School/Local-level Education Planning for Achieving Education 2030
When: 14-16 November 2017
Where: Novotel Bangkok Platinum Pratunam
Who: UNESCO Bangkok in close collaboration with UNICEF EAPRO and SEAMEO Innotech, will organize this workshop and bring together 13 country representatives both Ministry of Education and National Disaster Management Office from 7 countries (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga) in the Pacific.
Disasters and conflicts have devastating economic and social impacts and pose enormous setbacks to human security and development. The Asia-Pacific region is the most disaster-prone area of the world, and the region that experiences disasters which have the most severe impacts. However, key institutions in Asia and Pacific countries, including education ministries, often lack the capacity to effectively anticipate, respond to, cope with, manage and overcome crisis. The failure of these institutions during emergencies can compound the impact of disasters.
This workshop aims to 1) introduce the C/DRR module as a guide in the country’s C/DRR framework and 2) to share experiences and best practices of participating Pacific Countries which will be integrated into the final version of the module. The module in particular aims to enhance the capacity of the education planners to analyse the risks to conflict and disaster in the education sector; to design and enhance school/local-level policies, programmes, and curriculum for the reduction of conflict and disaster risks; to discuss the costing and financing of these programmes as an integral part of the education sector’s budget; and to identify relevant indicators for these programmes in order to monitor progress towards the objectives.
