UNESCO is a co-organizer of this regional multi-disciplinary academic conference and policy dialogue as a contribution to the ASEAN Work Plan on Education (AWPE), 2016-2020, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 2015-2030. Chulalongkorn University (CU) is hosting the conference in Bangkok with support from the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC), Ministry of Education, Thailand; as well as the Swedish International Agricultural Network Initiative (SIANI) Expert Group on “Higher Education for Sustainable Agriculture (HESA) and Food Systems in Southeast Asia,” based at Chulalongkorn University's School of Agricultural Resources (CUSAR). CU, UNESCO, HESA-SIANI and OHEC also invite partnerships to co-sponsor panels, side meetings or associated activities.

Why? Modern, conventional agriculture integrated with a global agri-food system contributes to many global environmental problems while malnutrition, hunger and poverty persist amid other serious socioeconomic and health concerns in Southeast Asia. Some current practices may even be endangering future food security by undermining the ecological basis of the global food system. Expertise from social and sustainability sciences and education for sustainable agriculture (ESA) initiatives can help address such challenges through new research, academic reforms, learning activities and policy dialogue. This conference invites related papers, panels, technical debates and policy dialogue sessions among academics, farmer groups, governments and regional or international agency representatives.

Around 150 people are expected to attend with 30 to 40 full paper presentations, special panels and policy dialogues over 3 days in plenary and/or parallel sessions and side events. Conference Proceedings will be published to provide good multi-disciplinary scientific evidence as a basis for more informed decision-making among ASEAN policy-makers, government agencies, university administrators, international organizations, donors and others.

Participation is free for speakers or resource people. For others a registration fee may apply but space is limited and pre-registration is required.
