Women in History – Telling HERstory through Memory of the World

The UNESCO Memory of the World (MoW) programme was established in 1992 to preserve the world’s documentary heritage, assist universal access, and increase awareness worldwide of the existence and significance of documentary heritage. As of today, the MoW international register contains 426 documentary heritage inscriptions from all over the world, 109 of which are from the Asia-Pacific region.

Gender equality is one of UNESCO’s global priorities. It refers to equal rights, and the responses and opportunities of women and men. UNESCO calls for the integration of a gender perspective in all programmes and activities. Very few inscriptions in the MoW register, however, address gender equality and promote empowerment of women in society and history.

The recently launched UNESCO’s ‘Gender Equality Baseline Study of Memory of the World in Asia-Pacific’ demonstrates that there are only four inscriptions in the MoW registers from Asia-Pacific that highlight gender dimensions. This illustrates the lack of gender perspectives in MoW inscribed documents. As one recommendation, the study suggests “identify gender equality as a key theme for potential joint nominations, or as a thematic category across registers”.


Objective of the ‘Women in History – Telling HERstory through Memory of the World’ project and call for contributions

UNESCO Bangkok has launched the ‘Women in History – Telling HERstory through Memory of the World’ project to identify, preserve and promote access to documentary heritage collections in the Asia-Pacific region that have gender-related stories or portray significant achievements of women in histories, with a special attention to records and documentary heritage that tell ‘her-story’.

All MoW Committees, nominators and memory institutions (galleries, libraries, archives, museums, etc.) in Asia-Pacific are invited to complete the short survey accessed below.

The results of the survey will be used first to develop online or offline exhibitions on ‘Women in History’, showcased at the MOWCAP 2020 General Meeting in Bangkok tentatively scheduled for 24-26 November (the meeting is not yet confirmed because of COVID-19 public health safety).
