Call for volunteers: Translate UNESCO’s latest AI animation series into indigenous languages

The Mekong countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam) and Singapore are home to about 400 indigenous languages. These languages are at risk of disappearing because of many reasons, including out-of-date usage that is not compatible with rapid technological changes in the world. On the other hand, indigenous communities face challenges regarding internet access and inclusion, which make it even harder for these languages to be easily used in the digital era.

As an emerging and influential technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now playing an increasingly important role in our daily lives, but there are very few resources to explain what AI is and how to use this technology for indigenous communities and in indigenous languages.

To promote access to digital information and content as well as to provide equal resources on these technologies, UNESCO Bangkok invites indigenous people to translate the newly launched AI animation series based on the UNESCO publication Steering AI and Advanced ICTs for Knowledge Societies – a Rights, Openness, Access, and Multi-stakeholder Perspective, to promote a better understanding of human-centred and ethical principles underpinning the development of AI. Each episode illustrates a key message from the publication.

The original scripts in English are about 900 words in total. The application process will be through the online UNV platform. Volunteers who complete the task successfully will receive certificates of completion from UNESCO through the UNV platform.
