Animation series provides insights into AI and the ROAM-X principles

We live in a digital era. As of October 2020, more than 4.6 billion people were connected to the internet, which means almost two-thirds of the global population are active users. Digital technologies have been emerging in all aspects of our lives.

Artificial intelligence (AI), one of the hottest frontier technologies, grew by more than 270 per cent in the past five years. More than 90 per cent of leading businesses have ongoing investments in artificial intelligence According to the software company Salesforce in 2019, people are 62 per cent more willing to use AI-supported services. Also, the database company Statista predicted that the number of AI-powered voice assistants will reach 8 billion by 2023, growing from 3.25 billion in 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit almost every economy and slowed the development of many industries. But this does not include AI and other information and communication technologies – from digital health sectors to distance learning, and public management to teleworking, COVID-19-related artificial intelligence, contact tracing, homecare technologies, teleworking and online meeting software all have grown in market size and ways of being used. According to a McKinsey report, most organizations have increased investment in AI business functions in response to the pandemic.

However, the increasing use of AI has attendant risks. For example, AI malfunctions amid the pandemic could be life-threatening. We need to make sure that the development of AI and other technologies is regulated to benefit society. AI development should respect principles of human rights and take into account ethical perspectives.

To ensure the ethical development of AI, full and inclusive participation is essential. International organizations, governments, the private sector, civil societies, academia, tech communities, media and members of the public all have a role to play. AI remains a niche technology, which not everyone is knowledgeable about, so it is important to provide the general public with information and relevant ethical perspectives.

To promote a better understanding of AI and human-centred perspectives underpinning its development, UNESCO has launched a series of short animations in English and French. The animation series were created based on the UNESCO publication Steering AI and Advanced ICTs for Knowledge Societies – a Rights, Openness, Access, and Multi-stakeholder Perspective.

The animations use everyday language to explain sophisticated terms related to AI and raise awareness. The series consists of seven episodes, each of which is about one minute long and illustrates a key message from the UNESCO ROAM-X principles.
