3rd Mekong Mangrove Forum

Blue Carbon Ecosystem Conservation, Restoration and Sustainable Utilization in
the Greater Mekong Sub-Region and beyond

In celebration of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem
1st of October: Mekong Mangrove Forum, organised by UNESCO & partners.

Mangroves and other blue carbon ecosystems have been lost at alarming rates, with serious ecological and socio-economic impacts. This requires urgent conservation, restoration, and scientific action. International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference in 2015 and celebrated annually since. Since 2018, UNESCO co-organized a number of interventions on mangrove management in partnership with national authorities, the foundation Manfred-HermsenStiftung, the Mangrove Action Project and Fauna & Flora International. The 1st and 2nd Mekong Mangrove Forums took place in Vietnam and Myanmar in 2019, encouraging more participation in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The 3rd Mekong Mangrove Forum, in response to COVID-19, will consist of a series of online events, with an inter-regional scope. Additional partners have joined the co-organizers, including the UN-REDD Programme, MCF and ISHU.

UNESCO has developed platforms to turn ideas into action. One of these platforms is the Mekong Mangrove Forum. This celebration is the beginning of a number of events and activities to conserve, restore and better utilize blue carbon ecosystems. Please join the 3rd Mekong Mangrove Forum on 1st of October.
