East Asia Workshop on Monitoring SDG4: Education Statistics and Tools
The Sustainable Development Goal on Education (SDG4) has a strong focus on data analysis and monitoring – yet it is acknowledged that the ‘traditional approaches to data may have reached their limits’. SDG4 has set out a multi-tiered indicator framework to measure progress, with each level serving a different purpose. As of 2016, however, data were available for only 44 per cent of the 11 global indicators and 60 per cent of thematic indicators in the Asia-Pacific (UIS, 2016). The complexity of the monitoring framework requires UNESCO Asia-Pacific Member States to strengthen their relevant capacities.
In this context, UNESCO Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education (UNESCO Bangkok), together with UNICEF Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific (EAPRO) and UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), will organize the East Asia Workshop on Monitoring SDG4: Education Statistics and Tools, 18-22 June 2018 in Bangkok.
The main purpose of the workshop is to guide Member States to:
- A holistic understanding of global, regional and national monitoring processes;
- The use of a National Strategy for the Development of Education Statistics (NSDES) for monitoring SDG4;
- Find solutions to strengthen an education data management system for efficient and effective planning, management and monitoring of SDG4 at the national level.
A regional training manual on monitoring SDG4, jointly developed by UNESCO Bangkok and UNICEF EAPRO, will be introduced at the workshop. The manual covers a wide range of modules, from the development of a national data production mechanism to an international data collection process to equip education policy-makers, statistics and monitoring offices, and practitioners with evidence-based planning and management of the education sector.
