Angoulême invites to rethink "the City of the future" through an international comic competition

Angoulême invites to rethink "the City of the future" through an international comic competition

When:
Fri, 02/05/2021

As part of the 2020 Year of the Comic Strip, declared by the French Ministry of Culture, Angoulême, a UNESCO's Creative City of Literature, launched an international comic strip competition on the theme of "the City of the future".

Organised in partnership with the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, the Festival international de la bande dessinée (FIBD) and the School of Urban Studies of Lyon, this competition aims to stimulate utopian ideas, awareness and cultures from all over the world. It further aims to share a collective reflection on the future of our cities, with regard to the many questions raised by the COVID-19 pandemic.

18 artists from 10 cities, including the Creative Cities of Literature - Bucheon (Republic of Korea), Nanjing (China), Ulyanovsk (Russian Federation), Quebec (Canada), Reykjavik (Iceland) and Slemani (Iraq), have produced a comic book on their vision of the future city. The project by Brigitte Archambault (Quebec) was selected and awarded by the jury. The artist will be invited to Angoulême during the FIBD in June 2021.

All the entries will be brought together in an exhibition entitled "the city of the future", presented during the FIBD in Angoulême. The exhibition will also be available for circulation in the participating cities. A scientific analysis carried out by the Urban School of Lyon is also foreseen to accompany the exhibition.
