يُعتبر قيادة الماشية للهجرة الموسمية على دروب حوض البحر المتوسط وجبال الألب شكلاً من أشكال الرعي. ففي فصلي الربيع والخريف من كلّ عام، تقود مجموعات من الرعاة، برفقة كلابهم وخيولهم، الآلاف من رؤوس الماشية على دروب تفصل بين منطقتين جغرافيتين ومناخيتين من الفجر إلى الغسق. وفي كثير من الحالات، تسافر عائلات الرعاة مع الماشية. ويمكن تمييز نوعين أساسيين من هجرة الماشية الموسمية: الهجرة الأفقية، في السهول والهضاب؛ والهجرة العمودية التي تكون عادة في المناطق الجبلية. وتشكّل هجرة الماشية الموسمية العلاقة بين الناس والحيوانات والنظم الإيكولوجية. وتشمل طقوساً وممارسات اجتماعية مشتركة ورعاية الحيوانات وتربيتها، وإدارة الأراضي والغابات والموارد المائية، والتعامل مع المخاطر الطبيعية. ويملك الرعاة معرفة عميقة بالبيئة والتوازن البيئي وتغير المناخ، لأنّ ذلك يمثّل أحد أكثر طرق تربية الحيوانات استدامة وفعالية. كما يملكون مهارات خاصة تتعلّق بجميع أنواع الحرف اليدوية وإنتاج الأغذية المعنية. وتمثّل الاحتفالات خلال فصلي الربيع والخريف بداية ونهاية هجرة الماشية الموسمية، حيث يتقاسم حملة المعارف الطعام والطقوس والقصص ويعرّفون الأجيال الشابة على هذه الممارسة. وينقل كبار الرعاة خبرتهم الخاصة للأجيال الشابة من خلال الأنشطة اليومية، ممّا يضمن استمرارية هذه الممارسة.
