2017 edition of Yukiterrace: Lighting up the winter night in Sapporo
From 4 to 12 February, Sapporo joins forces with fellow Creative City of Media Arts Gwangju to bring a multi-media snow experience to one of the city’s main squares. Five distinct artistic installations greet city dwellers, housed inside igloos on the background of the transfigured snowy white of Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza “Akapla.”
With the support of the Gwangju Cultural Foundation, artist Seung-Chan Gwon’s work is on display, which visitors can take in while keeping warm over a hot drink from the newly-added ice bar.
Another collaboration is taking place nearby at the same time as Yukiterrace, between Sapporo Snow Festival, Sapporo International Art Festival 2017, and Sapporo Icicle Festival, held at Shiryokan, the city’s old court house.
These initiatives aim to increase the awareness of citizens of the importance of creativity for cultural participation and dialogue, by placing media arts at the centre of the public sphere and thus broader reflections on sustainable urban development.
