Florianópolis organized the Week of Sustainable Gastronomy

Florianópolis organized the Week of Sustainable Gastronomy

When:
Tue, 06/18/2019 to Fri, 06/21/2019

The Brazilian Creative City of Florianópolis mobilized its citizens to celebrate World Sustainable Day throughout the week of 18 to 21 June 2019.

The event was attended by more than 2000 people and involved different stakeholders, who joined forces to raise awareness on culture and sustainable gastronomy under the aegis of the educational institutions that are part of the management group of Florianópolis’ membership to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The event aimed at fostering the development of responsible patterns of consumption and production of food; strengthening the conservation of biodiversity and community food security.

The rich agenda of the week began with a seminar on gastronomy and sustainability and continued with a series of initiatives such as a lecture by the renowned Chef Daniel Paiva, who also participated in the Annual Conference of the UNESCO Creative Cities in Fabriano as part of the Gastronomy Pavilion, organized in the margins of the conference.

Throughout the week, teachers and students of gastronomy organized workshops, competitions and other initiatives such as ECOmida aimed at raising awareness about the necessity to reduce food waste and pollution, while ensuring the quality and creativity of gastronomy by stimulating consumption of organic products, family farming and local production.

The Week of Sustainable Gastronomy represented an important opportunity to explore challenges and opportunities of the gastronomy sector for local identity, sustainable development and cultural diversity.
