Despite being a vibrant and popular city, boosting strong economic growth and business development, Chengdu is experiencing environmental degradation. As a UCCN City of Gastronomy, culinary heritage is highly valued within the city; however, due to the use of coal, the industry is having a negative impact on the surrounding environment. Currently, the government and local environmental protection agencies are developing initiatives aimed at tackling environmental issues without impacting the sector. The ‘Eat.Clean.Care.’ initiative began with the ‘Clean Energy Transformation’ pilot which involved exchanging the use of coal for clean fuel in 4000 local restaurants and barbeque centres. The promotion of ‘Clean Fuel Transformation’ has led to positive results and further engagement from those directly involved in the gastronomy sector. This approach to reducing air pollution is praised for not only improving the environment and living conditions for the residents of Chengdu, but also for making vital steps in helping China achieve its goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
