Case studies

The case study series for the UNESCO-Pearson Initiative for Literacy: Improved Livelihoods in a Digital World examines and highlights how inclusive digital solutions can help people with low skills or low literacy levels use technology in a way that supports skills development and, ultimately, improves livelihoods.

In response to a call for proposals, for which UNESCO received 130 applications from 60 countries around the world, 14 initiatives were selected for deeper review as case studies. The initiatives span a range of areas -- health, agriculture, government, displaced populations, and green and environmental practices – and each illustrates how appropriately designed digital solutions can create entry points into the knowledge society for people with low skills or low literacy levels.

Each case study considers how the different digital solutions were designed with users, the reach and result of usage, and, most importantly, the lessons learned and recommendations for developing more inclusive solutions.

Collectively the case studies serve as input into the forthcoming UNESCO guidelines aimed at digital solution providers, implementation and donor agencies, development partners and governments, on how to create more inclusive digital solutions that develops the skills of users and improves their livelihoods in the 21st century.
