LAB.2030 | RUA: Supporting the Redevelopment and Resurgence of Urban Space

LAB.2030 | RUA: Supporting the Redevelopment and Resurgence of Urban Space

When:
Tue, 06/12/2018

Located in northern Portugal, Amarante is renowned for its medieval architecture and its position in the popular wine region. The aim of the Amarante Urban Revitalization initiative (RUA) is to create more than just new and improved public areas, but to craft a positive and emotional response in the hearts and minds of the residents and tourists who go there. In recognizing the importance of public spaces, the project intends to repurpose and revitalise a collection of areas and buildings within the city. The team relies upon the creativity of local inhabitants when designing the city’s new features, as they are a key part of daily life in Amarante. The initiative promotes the use of these new developments for outdoor activities and social gatherings. In doing so, they encourage active and healthy lifestyles for their residents, as well as preserving the historical buildings. Endorsing local trade is also an important aspect of the mission as it not only supports economic growth within the area but also generates a sense of commitment to community. With such investment, the potential growth in tourism would bring continued economic stability to the city. Generating more visitors would also provide an opportunity to present the outstanding architectural heritage, keeping the culture and traditions alive.
