Buiding the capacities of African teachers to educate about mass atrocities: Inception meeting for UNESCO and UNESCO-IICBA
UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA) and the Section for Global Citizenship and Peace Education (ED/PSD/GCP), in cooperation with the UN Outreach Programmes on the Holocaust and the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda of the United Nations Department for Global Communications (UNDGC), seek to strengthen the capacities of African educators to address violent pasts and contribute to the prevention of genocide and other atrocity crimes in their respective national and regional contexts. In support of this goal, IICBA, UNESCO, and UNDGC will jointly develop a teachers’ guide and teacher training on education about genocide and other atrocity crimes, tailored to identified needs and existing curricula frameworks.
