Director-General condemns murder of journalist Ronnie Villamor in the Philippines

27/11/2020

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has denounced the killing on 14 November of freelance journalist Ronnie Villamor in Milagros, in the Philippines island of Masbate, where he was covering a land dispute.

I condemn the murder of Ronnie Villamor. I call on the authorities to investigate this tragedy and hold those responsible for it to account. Journalists provide the public with essential information and threats against them undermine the free flow of information and open debate.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Villamor, who worked for several media in Masbate was was shot dead by men in uniform.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
