UNESCO Director-General condemns the murder of blogger Avijit Roy

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has denounced the assassination of Avijit Roy, a writer and web journalist, killed in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 26 February.

“I condemn the assassination of Avijit Roy,” the Director-General declared. “All journalists must be able to speak freely and contribute to public debate without fearing for their lives. I urge the authorities to do all in their power to bring those responsible for this crime to justice.”

Armed men attacked Avijit Roy, founder of the news site mukto-mona.com (free thinking), as he was leaving a book fair near the University of Dhaka with his wife.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
