Director-General condemns killing of journalist Burhan Uddin Mujakker in Bangladesh

26/02/2021

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called for an investigation into the killing of journalist Burhan Uddin Mujakker who was shot on 19 February in the Bangladeshi district of Noakhali.

I condemn the killing of Burhan Uddin Mujakker. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the journalist’s death and bring its perpetrators to trial. Journalists must be allowed to carry out their work informing the public without fearing for their lives.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Mujakker died in hospital after he was shot in the neck while covering a political clash in which eight other people suffered bullet injuries. He was the local correspondent for Bangladesh Samachar and online news website bartabazar.com .

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
