Director-General condemns murder of journalist Mario Arturo Ortega García in Guatemala

24/11/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the killing of Guatemalan journalist Mario Arturo Ortega García, who died on 14 November, four days after he was shot by unknown assailants near his home at Escuintla, near Guatemala City.

I condemn the murder of journalist Mario Arturo Ortega García. I call on the authorities to investigate this murder and make sure that justice is served. Journalists must be able to carry out their professional duties without fearing for their safety.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Ortega García covered political and social issues for San José Total, a television channel and news website he founded.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
