Welcome to the Ocean Decade Exhibition – the result of the global creative community mobilizing to help transform the image of the ocean science and conservation, raise awareness of the importance of the ocean, and inspire support for action, during this pivotal decade.

In an effort to help increase international ambition towards the protection of the global coastal blue carbon ecosystems, the IOC has recently joined the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment as Coordinator of the International Partnership for Blue Carbon (IPBC).

An unprecedented analysis of almost 10,000 Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) events worldwide over the past 33 years was launched today by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

The first-ever global statistical analysis examined ~9,500 HABs events over 33 years and found that the harm caused by HABs rises in step with growth of the aquaculture industry and marine exploitation and calls for more research on linkages.

The President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkır, will convene a High-Level Thematic Debate on the Ocean and Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water on Tuesday, 1 June 2021, at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

In the lead up to the 31st Session of the IOC Assembly, the IOC Secretariat is organizing a series of thematic webinars to update Member States on progress achieved since 2019 across its programmes and projects.

Held every year since 2011, CARIBE WAVE is a tsunami exercise organized by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions, an area where coastal communities are at major risk of tsunamis. Especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic, practicing response plans and pandemic-specific guidelines is crucial to ensure communities are ready to respond to tsunami emergencies should they arise.
