Call for Applications for the International Jazz Day Global Host City 2022 is now open

06/04/2021

UNESCO is launching the Call for Applications for the Global Host City for the 2022 International Jazz Day celebrations.

International Jazz Day, proclaimed by UNESCO’s General Conference in 2011, is a global celebration of jazz music held annually on 30 April. Raising awareness of the role of jazz as an educational tool and as a force for creativity, dialogue and intercultural exchange, International Jazz Day highlights how jazz breaks down barriers and supports freedom of expression.

Each year, in addition to local celebrations and events worldwide, the Global Host City, designated by UNESCO’s Director-General following an application and selection process, organizes a star-studded televised concert and multiple educational and outreach activities. Past Global Host Cities have included Melbourne and Sydney, Saint Petersburg, Havana, Washington, D.C., Osaka, Istanbul, United Nations Headquarters in New York, and UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

This is an exciting opportunity to share with the world a rich jazz programme from your city in 2022, with a major celebration that takes place not only on 30 April, but that can extend throughout the year and across the country through educational and outreach activities.

The Call for Applications is open to cities and cities in partnership with a nongovernmental organization in UNESCO Member States and Associate Members. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by 1 October 2021 (midnight CET).

The Global Host City fully commits to the organization of and all costs associated with the Global All-Star Concert and the educational and outreach programme for their celebration of International Jazz Day. They also commit to working closely with UNESCO and UNESCO’s partner, the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, which oversees the overall planning, production and coordination of the International Day.
