UNESCO Almaty marks World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development with release of animations from Central Asia and the Caucasus
World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is celebrated annually on the 21st of May.The UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity was adopted at the General Conference in Paris in 2001 and united member states in a commitment to recognise, strengthen and actively promote cultural diversity at local, national and international levels. The following year the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 57/429 declaring the 21st of May to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The resolution calls on all nations to give greater weight and visibility to the theme of dialogue among civilisations, cultures and religions.
Cultural diversity is key to shaping the social, environmental and economic pillars of sustainable development for the benefit of all of humanity. Respect for cultural diversity helps countries throughout the world to establish dialogue, mutual understanding, cooperation and peace.
To mark this important day, the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office has produced five short animated films about the distinctive cultural attributes of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.
These cultural collages were created by Kazakh artist Daria Amangalieva, and introduce viewers to the cultural wealth of the peoples of Central Asia and the South Caucasus by showcasing the tangible and intangible heritage of the five countries.
The animations will be released on UNESCO Almaty's social media pages on Instagram and Facebook.
UNESCO encourages everyone to help promote cultural heritage. Marking the 20th World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said “without significant support, structures will disappear, opportunities to stimulate and hear different ways of seeing and feeling will be missed, cultural diversity may be diminished, and humanity will be the poorer for it.” Therefore, she added, “UNESCO appeals to all: together, let us celebrate and support cultural diversity, the symbol of our humanity.”
