Director-General calls for investigation into death in detention of writer and blogger Mushtaq Ahmed in Bangladesh

02/04/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has urged the authorities to shed light on the death in prison of Mushtaq Ahmed on 25 February in Bangladesh.

I am deeply concerned about the death of imprisoned blogger Mushtaq Ahmed. I call on the authorities to investigate the events that led to his death and, take all appropriate legal action recommended by an independent investigation.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Ahmed had been in prison since last May when he was detained for posting criticism of the Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, allegedly in breach of the Bangladeshi Digital Security Act.
