This year’s World Environment Day will launch and focus on the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a global rallying cry to heal our planet.
Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean. It can help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent a mass extinction. It will only succeed if everyone plays a part.
The World Heritage Convention has an important part to play to protect ecosystems at UNESCO World Heritage sites. Today on World Environment Day, we share this video with you, which explains this crucial role of the Convention in Natural World Heritage monitoring and conservation.
The World Heritage Convention cannot achieve its full potential without the support and inclusion of site managers, local communities, indigenous peoples, youth and more to implement its mandate (such as ecosystem restoration for example).
