The World in Faces: Towards a Decade of Action for the World’s Indigenous Peoples and their Languages
“The World In Faces” exhibition is organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the photography artist Mr Alexander Khimushin, and with the support of the Permanent Delegation of the Russian Federation to UNESCO.
This exhibition celebrates the rich diversity of the world’s Indigenous Peoples, their unique knowledge systems and understanding of the world, and their languages, cultures, traditions and histories. The majority of the world’s approximately 7000 languages is used by Indigenous Peoples. Indigenous language users are adversely affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as it concerns access to health care, education, accurate information services and access to digital content, as these tools are often not provided in Indigenous languages.
In accordance with the rights enshrined in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), UNESCO supports Indigenous Peoples’ rights to:
Live in freedom, peace and security;
Establish and control their educational systems and institutions providing education in their own languages, in a manner appropriate to their cultural methods of teaching and learning;
Revitalize, use, develop and transmit to future generations their histories, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures, and to designate and retain their own names for communities, places and persons;
The dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations which shall be appropriately reflected in education and public information.
