Llíria renders homage to the victims of the 2011 earthquake in Japan through music

A UNESCO Creative City of Music since 2019, Llíria (Spain) has continued to utilize the power of culture and creativity especially music to strengthen its various initiatives, collaborations, and development plans.

On 11 March, Llíria will organize a virtual tribute to pay homage to the victims of the earthquake that struck Japan in 2011, exactly 10 years ago. As part of remembering the resilience of the victims and the local population to overcome the impact of the disaster, Llíria in close collaboration with local music talents, will use an audiovisual sequence linking music to photography. The sequence will highlight a selection of original photographs of the catastrophe by Japanese photographer Satoshi Ueda.

As part of the audiovisual memorial tribute, the local orchestra “Agrupación Musical Edetana Vicente Giménez” will perform a classical guitar piece, titled “Lágrimas de la tierra” (Tears of the Earth) composed by Mario Muriana, exclusively for the event. The tribute will be premiered at Ca La Vila, the emblematic Llíria Town Hall.

With the aim to further spread a message of hope and solidarity, the video will be distributed to the Embassy of Japan in Spain, as well as to the 9 Creative Cities from Japan, including Hamamatsu, Tambasasayama, Tsuruoka, Kobe, Sapporo, Nagoya, Yamagata, Kanazawa and Asahikawa. The video is also foreseen to be broadcasted on major television stations in Japan.

The tribute also echoes the social media campaign ‘weRculture’ initiated by the Creative Cities of Music and supported by the UCCN as a part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
