UNESCO supports GAPMIL Global MIL Awards 2017 - Call for nominations

03/07/2017

The GAPMIL (Global Alliance for Partnership on Media and Information Literacy) Global MIL Awards 2017 will recognize significant work and contributions in the field of Media and Information Literacy (MIL), and will honour individuals or organizations who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in integrating MIL into their activities and practice on a local or global level. Work in any area or sector can be recognized, as long as the activities reflect integration of MIL concepts, including intercultural dialogue, in education, research, policy, advocacy, and in the communication, information, and technology industries (including cultural industries).

Deadline for submission:

The call for nominations will be open until 20 August 2017. Nominations should be submitted here. More details about the Awards are available on the Global MIL Week 2017 website.

Media and information literacy in critical times

The wave of false news has been inundating the media and information landscape since 2016. MIL is one of the appropriate and sustainable responses. In connection with the theme of this year’s Global MIL Week: “Media and Information Literacy in Critical Times: Re-imagining Ways of Learning and Information Environments”, the GAPMIL Awards 2017 encourage nominations that exemplify outstanding activities or achievements in using MIL as an empowering tool to counter misinformation, disinformation, intolerance of the belief, culture or religion of others, hate speech, radicalization and extremist content in online and offline media as well as other information environments. Please see details of the other awards categories here.

History of the Awards and winners

The GAPMIL Global MIL Awards (previously called Global MIL Awards) were established and awarded for the first time in 2015 during the fourth annual global celebration of the MIL Week held in Philadelphia, USA. Please see the list of winners of the two previous editions on the GAPMIL website.

Awards ceremony during the Global MIL Week 2017 Feature Conference

As per tradition, the GAPMIL Global MIL Awards will be presented during the Global MIL Week 2017 Feature Conference, the Seventh MIL and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Conference, to be held from 24 to 27 October, in Kingston (Jamaica). The awards winners will be invited to the event or connected to the event via remote participation in case the winners cannot attend.
