UNESCO IITE at International Conference “Media and Information Literacy for Building Culture of Open Government”

UNESCO IITE participated in the International Conference “Media and Information Literacy for Building Culture of Open Government” which was organized within the UNESCO Information for All Programme in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from the 6th to 10th of June 2016 in the framework of the 8th International IT-Forum.

Relations between media and information literacy (MIL) and the efficiency of open government have not been clearly formulated on the international agenda. The conference gathered more than a hundred academics, politicians, diplomats, journalists, teachers, governmental officials, civil society activists and private entrepreneurs from 45 countries

The topicality of the conference subject was highlighted in the opening addresses by Mr. Frank La Rue, UNESCO Assistant Director-General, Ms. Chafica Haddad, UNESCO IFAP Chair and Deputy Permanent Delegate of Grenada to UNESCO, Ms. Natalia Komarova, Governor of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug – Ugra, Mr. Gennady Gatilov, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Evgeny Kuzmin, Chairman of the Russian UNESCO IFAP Committee, President of the Interregional Library Cooperation Centre.

Ms. Svetlana Knyazeva, Chief of the UNESCO IITE Section of Digital Pedagogy and Learning Materials, delivered the speech “ICT for Education: A Holistic Approach to Media and Information Literacy” focusing on the developments of UNESCO regarding the research and standards’ establishment in MIL. Ms. Knyazeva also presented the achievements of UNESCO IITE in this sphere.
