Online presentation of the publication “Media and Information Literacy in the Digital Age: How to Teach the Teachers”

On 18 May 2021, the presentation of the publication “Media and Information Literacy in the Digital Age: How to Teach the Teachers” prepared by the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE) and the UNESCO Information for All Programme was held online. The publication includes articles reflecting some trends in the development of the digital media environment, approaches to the formation of media and information literacy (MIL), practices describing the experience of implementing MIL training for teachers and students of various levels and forms of education. The publication also contains recommendations aimed to integrate MIL into teacher education and professional development.

Mr. Tao Zhan, Director of UNESCO IITE, Ms. Dorothy Gordon, Chair of UNESCO Information for All Programme, Ms. Ksenia Gaverdovskaya, Adviser at Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO, and Mr. Edward Nikitin, Executive director of the Eurasian Association of the Pedagogical Universities, welcomed the participants.

The editors and compilers of the publication – Mr. Yuriy Chyorny, Head of the Center for Information Studies at the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ms. Tatyana Murovana, Programme specialist at UNESCO IITE, – shared their vision of the subject area and impressions of working on the publication.

Invited as a reviewer, Ms. Irina Fateeva, Professor of the Chair on Media Education at Moscow State Pedagogical University, expressed high appreciation for the book. She noted the systematic approach to composing the structure of the publication, which allows to dive in the current context characterized by human interaction with information and media, to see the entire issue of the media competencies of a teacher, and to learn about local practices in this area. Ms. Fateeva also made a brief overview of those articles, the authors of which were not able to participate in the event.

The presentations of the authors involved in the development of the publication were of special interest. Mr. Igor Shnurenko, Independent expert on AI, writer, Ms. Gulnar Asanbaeva, Regional consultant on media literacy at MediaCAMP Programme in Kazakhstan, Ms. Zhekshen Kyzy Kunduz, Programme specialist at Center for Mass Media Foundation, Ms. Elena Romanicheva, Senior Fellow at Moscow City University, Ms. Kristina Zaitseva, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Professional Education at Saint Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education, Ms. Yulia Emelianova, English teacher at Kolpashevo school № 5, Tomsk region, Ms. Aygul Tazhmuratova, Guidance counselor at Orenburg Regional Creative Arts Center for Children and Young People named after V. Polyanichko, and Ms. Anna Gimelber, Teacher of Russian language and literature at Second Novosibirsk Gymnasium, delivered their presentations. It was noted that the publication is structured as a collective monograph that reflects a wide range of approaches and activities for the integration of media and information literacy in teacher education and practice. Several authors emphasized that the work on the publication stimulated new ideas for the improvement of the MIL level of teachers.
