IICBA and ADEA Co-organized a virtual webinar on Teacher Motivation in Africa
Teacher Motivation is essential for recruiting and retaining teachers in the profession, and critical to the success in enhancing quality Education in the context of 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16-25).
On July 14, 2021, the International Insititute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA, a coordinator of the CESA Teacher development Cluster, and the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) co-organized a virtual webinar on Teacher motivation in Africa. The objectives were to improve participants’ knowledge and understanding of the issues of teacher motivation in Africa; disseminate the various useful resources and tools on teacher motivation and support; and share practical experiences that are adapted for the continent.
In attendance were over 50 Education experts and stakeholders, including Hon. Claudiana Ayo Cole, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Gambia, and Dr. Yao Ydo, Director of UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE). Mr. Saliou Sall, Senior Program Coordinator of IICBA, moderated the webinar.
In her opening remarks, Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, Director of IICBA, welcomed everyone and expressed her gratitude to ADEA for their great collaboration. she highlighted the need for teacher motivation and support in Africa and its impact on student learning outcomes. Following this, Mr. Albert Nsengiyumva, Executive Secretary of ADEA, throughout his keynote address, shared ADEA's experience and resources to motivate and support teachers during the Covid 19 crisis.
In the next session, Dr. Binyam Sisay Mendisu, Program Officer, IICBA, presented on the emerging issues on teacher motivation in Africa by outlining the most salient points of the resource Teacher Support and Motivation Framework which was published by UNESCO IICBA in 2017. After, Dr. Moges Yigezu, Associate Professor at Addis Ababa University, presented a study carried out on teacher motivation throughout Ethiopia. Finally, Mr. Shem Okore Bodo, Senior Programs Officer of ADEA, shared major findings of a teacher motivation in three African countries: Kenya, Rwanda, and Senegal.
During the Q&A session, an interactive discussion took place between the speakers and participants around the factors that demotivate teachers, how to address these factors and the comparison of education and other sectors.
In her address to the group, Hon. Claudiana Ayo Cole, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, the Gambia, reitera) ted the need to motivate and recognize teachers and shared best practices from the Gambia on teacher motivation. She also stressed the need to involve all stakeholders. Subsequently, Dr. Yao Ydo, Director of UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE), emphasized the involvement of teachers in decision-making and expressed the IBE's will to strengthen their partnership with IICBA.
Both IICBA and ADEA are striving to continue working towards the quality of education by bringing to light the need for focusing on Teacher Motivation and thus achieving the Education 2030 agenda.
