Director-General condemns the killing of broadcaster Abraham Mendoza in Mexico

23/07/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of radio journalist Abraham Mendoza in the city of Morelia (Mexico) on 19 July.

I condemn the killing of Abraham Mendoza. I strongly urge the authorities to pursue their investigation to find the perpetrators of this violent crime. The investigation should also seek to determine whether the assault stood in connection with the victim’s journalistic work.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO

Mendoza was shot at close range while leaving a gym. He was currently a contributor to the radio programme “Observatorio” of the radio station Uve Radio 98.1 FM at Vasco de Quiroga University. Mendoza in recent years reduced his work as a radio broadcaster but he was well-known for having worked with a number of different outlets in TV and radio for many years.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
