Director-General urges investigation into murder of journalist Sisay Fida in Ethiopia

27/05/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of broadcast journalist Sisay Fida in the town of Dembi Dollo in the Oromia region of Ethiopia on 9 May.

I condemn the murder of Sisay Fida. Violence against journalists represents a criminal threat to press freedom and to the fundamental human right of freedom of expression. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances of this crime and ensure that its perpetrators are held to account.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Fida, a reporter and coordinator for the Oromia Broadcasting Network, was shot near his home. He is reported to have received anonymous death threats in connection with his work.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
