The Creative Cities of Literature celebrate together the International Literacy Day

The Creative Cities of Literature celebrate together the International Literacy Day

When:
Wed, 09/08/2021

On 8 September 2021, nine UNESCO Creative Cities of Literature - including Dunedin (New Zealand), Exeter (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), Heidelberg (Germany), Kuhmo (Finland), Manchester (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), Nanjing (People’s Republic of China), Odessa (Ukraine), Ulyanovsk (Russian Federation) and Bucheon (Republic of Korea) - are joining forces to celebrate the International Literacy Day together.

Recognizing the essential role of literature, its ability to enhance life outcomes and its part in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, Creative Cities of Literature – led by Bucheon – have decided to coordinate their actions on this special Day. These celebrations, in line with the objectives of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, will take place in each of the Creative Cities.

Indeed, the Creative Cities of Bucheon, Exeter and Manchester are focusing their efforts on providing access to and participation in cultural activities for vulnerable or marginalized demographics. Each will, in its own way, guarantee inclusive access, and offer a taste of literacy-centric activities to the elderly, children and adults from disadvantaged families, whose age and economic situation have sometimes prevented from enjoying cultural events.
