Open call for artists, writers and youth: take part in the design of Flashcards for Education Futures

Turn it around Flashcards for Education Futures

Turn it Around: Flashcards for Education Futures is a project produced by the Artists’ Literacies Institute and artist Adriene Jenik. It aims at developping a learning tool for adults to reimagine the approach to education, and people's relationship with nature and the living world during this time of climate crisis.

What is different about this flashcards project? Usually, flashcards are designed by educators for students and children. This time, the deck of flashcards will be designed by youth for adults (education policymakers, politicians, and teachers). By flipping who teaches who, this project is a reminder that everyone - and everything - must change.

Supported by and in close partnership with the Open Society Foundations and UNESCO, and being developed with artists and sustainability researchers at Arizona State University, the project is on track to make its debut in November at COP26 Glasgowat and at the launch of UNESCO’s futures of education report.

In the framework of the Futures of Education initiative, we invite you to take part in the design of these flashcards. We are soliciting artwork and ‘flashcard prompts’ from youth artists, youth thinkers, and youth leaders that will contribute to develop a radical curricular tool that can be used to re-train the ‘grownups’ who currently make the decisions about big systems affecting our collective future.

Submit your thoughts, visions, dreams and artwork! Your submission will help to envision an education for a just transition to a more sustainable world.  Selected submissions will be gathered into a global collection of FLASHCARDS FOR EDUCATION FUTURES and introduced to policymakers at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and the launch of UNESCO’s Future of Education report (November 2021).

The deadline for submissions is 23 July. More information about the project, its timeline and rewards is available on the official website of the project.
